Elementary School

Please do not enter the main parking lot area directly in front of theáSimonianáCenter between the restricted times posted along the driveway (there are both morning and afternoon hours posted)! áThere area two signs, one located at the edge of the sidewalk and roads's edge near the auditorium and the other is across the street.
Parents:ááDuring morning drop-off along the side of the building, please DO NOT let children out of the car into the parking lot side of the lot. áAll of the kids should be getting out of your cars on the passenger side (closest to the sidewalk). áAlso, pull all the way forward before you start letting the kids out. áThree cars at the same time can can safely unload along the sidewalk if everyone pulls all the way forward.
During afternoon parent pick-up, please continue to keep the area along the roadway where the buses pull into the school parking area, free from cars - yes, even when I am not there to ask you to not park there. áThis makes for a safe and quick entrance/exit of the buses each day.

Sometimes issues pop up during the school day which need some extra attention in how they're handled. áThe first ápoint of contact is from the classroom teachers and then it typically goes up the chain to the Principals. áI meet with each school's Principals throughout the week to discuss any concerns that they may have. áToday, Mrs. Harrison asked if I would talk to Mrs. Whittier's 4th grade class about respecting each other's personal belongings. áWe had a great discussion about some techniques the kids could use to make sure they're respecting everyone's personal belongings in their classrooms.

Today the Elementary School welcomed Ellen Miller from the Worcester District Attorney's Office. áMs. Miller spoke with the kids about bullying and how to help themselves if anyone tried to bully them. áI also took a moment to talk with the kids about bus safety and how it's important for them to follow the rules of the bus so their driver can make sure everyone gets home safely.

CSI: Sutton Enrichment Class
Mr.Busybody is missing and we need to find out what happened to him! áMyself and Officer McGee were asked to help the CSI Enrichment class process some evidence that may be related to the crime scene. áOur area of evidence processing was fingerprinting and lifting fingerprints from various types of objects and surfaces. áI had a great time watching the kid's reactions to when the fingerprint powder magically revealed the fingerprints we were looking for. áI can't wait to find out who committed the crime they were áinvestigating!

The final ALICE training session took place today and we had a great crowd of faculty and staff from the Elementary School along with other members of the district who may have missed the previous training sessions. áEveryone was attentive and cooperative and helped make the training day a great success with their participation and thoughtful questions. áWe'll continue to building up on this foundation next year as we incorporate more training for members of the district so they can continue to help keep themselves and their students safe each day at work!

October 2015
Every morning I try and make it out to the parent drop-off area to help with the traffic flow and let the little peeps (people) know that I'm on school grounds to help make them feel safe. áI never want to have safety be a concern to any of of them. áIt's during this time that I also get to see the family unit together and watch all of you interact with each other in your cars, even for just a few minutes. áSome of your kiddos caught my attention early on and I've developed nicknames for them as a way of showing that I may not remember all of their given names, but I remember something about them that makes them unique to me. áFor example, there's "Hat Guy". áHat Guy is a little boy who I noticed very early on in the school year because he had an affinity for unique hats and he wore a different one everyday. áI'll ask Hat Guy about his day's hat choice and learn a little bit about him or his family and we start our day like that. áyes
I recently have added a new "peep" to my nickname crew and that's "Hug-a-Bug". áOne day, another young boy seemed exasperated as he exited his Mom's car to begin his walk into the school. Then without warning he spontaneously stopped to give me a hug. (This is a little different of an experience for a police officer who's been responding to police calls for service for almost 20 years....) Hug-a-Bug didn't say anything, just hugged me and went about his day. áNow, every morning, Hug-a-Bug greets me this way and it's a great start to the day! áheart
Then there's Amelia. áI met Amelia one morning as she helped a fellow classmate by being kind to him when he was clearly having a difficult day. I wanted Amelia to get recognized as a Bucket Filler for her kindness so I did a little research to find out what her name was since I didn't know it at the time.
Then we have "Pretty Lady", aka (that means "also known as", in police lingo) Charlie! áCharlie caught my eye with all of her pretty headbands that changed every day....Charlie wasn't too sure about me during our first few exchanges, but I think I've won her over throughout the weeks since she and I danced together at Fun Night Out a few weeks ago.ásmiley

So slowly but surely I'm getting to know more and more of your kids and hope to have that continue as time goes on!
