Public schools in the Commonwealth are required to comply with regulations 105CMR210.000:The Administration of Prescription Medications in Public and Private Schools.
- Any medication, prescription and non-prescription, requires a physician's written order and written parental permission. The health office can administer certain OTC medications if a parent or guardian has completed the parent permission form sent home at the beginning of each school year.
- Medication orders must be renewed each academic year. The medication must be picked up by a parent or guardian at the end of the year or it will be discarded.
- Any medication must be transported to and from school by a parent or guardian and delivered directly to the health office. The medication must be in a properly labeled pharmacy container.
- Students are not allowed to carry ANY medication on their person, with the exception of emergency medication. Student may carry and self-administer inhalers, insulin and epinephrine ONLY with written permission from the parent/guardian and physician.
